The annual military display to mark Her Majesty The Queen's official birthday was held in Horse Guards Parade today. Queen Elizabeth's actual birthday is 21st April but is officially celebrated in June when better weather is likely.
Today also starts the Platinum Jubilee celebrations to mark 70 years of the Queen's accession to the throne. Her father King George VI died on 6th February 1952 and on that day Princess Elizabeth became queen. On 2nd June 1953, Her Majesty's Coronation took place in Westminster Abbey.
The four day long weekend will be marked by the royal family in several public events. Today the annual Trooping The Colour kicked off the celebrations.
I was present at Trooping The Colour in 1992 when the Queen was marking 40 years on the throne.
