George's parents the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released three photos to mark the occasion. The photoshoot had taken place a few weeks ago at the Natural History Museum in Kensington when the family visited the Sensational Butterflies exhibition. Catherine is Patron of the Museum.
Press Association's John Stillwell took the photos which show the young Prince fascinated by the butterfies and also demonstrating his new walking skills. The photographer said George was "quick on his feet", "determined" and "lively".
Catherine and William released the following statement:
"We would like to take this opportunity on George's first birthday to thank everyone over the last year, wherever we have met them, both at home and overseas, for their warm and generous good wishes to George and our family."
George was wearing striped dungarees by Petit Bateau. His parents will be hosting an afternoon tea for George's godparents and close family.
