While we wait for Baby Sussex to be announced or arrive let's look at royal babies being presented to the public over the years:

Baby Countdown

Prince George and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge have been out of the public eye since September when George started school at Thomas's Battersea.

The little prince was accompanied on his first day by dad Prince William but mum Catherine was suffering from extreme morning sickness and had to stay home in bed. 

William and George's arrival at Thomas's was captured by the press and Kensington Palace issued a photo of the two princes standing on the front steps of their home. 

Likewise, Charlotte commenced preschool
at Willcocks Nursery School not far from home in Kensington in early January. Press photographers were not in attendance but again the Palace released two gorgeous photos of the two year old princess taken by the Duchess of Cambridge. 

We really haven't seen much of the children since the Cambridge tour of Germany and Poland last July. But the coming months will present more opportunities to see the little ones. 

In April, the third Cambridge baby is due and it is expected that Catherine will again give birth in the Lindo Wing of St Mary's hospital in Paddington.  

As well as a photo opportunity on the steps of the hospital, it is hoped new photos will be issued to mark the arrival of this new prince or princess. Charlotte will turn three on May 2nd.

If that isn't enough excitement for the family and royal watchers, Prince Harry will wed Ms. Meghan Markle at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle on 19th May. George and Charlotte may well play a role as pageboy and flower girl just as they did for Aunty Pippa last May.

And then there will be the baby's christening approximately three months after his or her birth as well as Trooping the Colour at Buckingham Palace in early June.

Happy 3rd Birthday Prince George

On Friday 22nd July, Prince George of Cambridge turns 3 years old. He was born at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital, Paddington where his father William was born.

George was quite a difficult infant and has become an energetic and curious young boy. He loves anything with wheels or wings and took delight in joining his parents only two weeks ago at the Royal
International Air Tattoo. 
 
Climbing in and out of helicopters and fighter aircraft was a real treat for George, who can often be seen watching helicopters come and go from the lawns behind his London home Kensington Palace.

In January George started at a local Montessori nursery school close to Amner Hall, the main Cambridge family home on the Sandringham Estate, Norfolk. 

He attends the school a few mornings a week and no doubt some of George's new chums will be invited to join the family for George's birthday party. 

Catherine recently revealed George visits the Natural History Museum where he particularly enjoys seeing the 3D sculptures and displays. 

George and young sister Charlotte share family pets Lupo the cocker spaniel and Marvin the hamster. George is also learning to play tennis on the Anmer Hall tennis court.

Catherine and William are doing their best to balance a normal upbringing at a local school whilst growing up in stately homes and relatives who are anything but normal.

Happy 1st Birthday Charlotte

On the 2nd May 2015, Princess Charlotte was born in the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital, Paddington. The same birth place as her brother George, father William and uncle Harry.

The baby girl was the second child and first daughter for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. 

Almost two weeks overdue, Catherine had gone into labour at Kensington Palace the evening before. Just after 6am, the Duchess was admitted to hospital and at 8.34am, the princess was born weighing 8lb 3oz.

During the afternoon Prince William went to Kensington Palace to collect Prince George and take him to the hospital to meet his new baby sister. By all accounts the introduction went well. 

Later George was taken home by his nanny and just after 6.10pm the Duke and Duchess left hospital with their beautiful new daughter who was 4th in line to the throne. The family retired to Kensington Palace for a few days where the baby was met by her grandparents and the Queen. 

The princess was officially named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Charlotte is thought to be the feminine version of Charles, her paternal grandfather. Elizabeth in honour of the Queen and the late Queen Mother. Diana is a touching nod to the baby's paternal grandmother, the Princess of Wales who passed away in 1997. 

The Cambridge family decamped to their country home Anmer Hall on the Sandringham Estate to begin their new life as a family of four in the relative privacy and quiet away from London. 

Charlotte was Christened on July 5th at St Mary Magdalene, Sandringham. It is the same venue for the Christening of her late grandmother Diana who also lived on the Sandringham Estate at Park House when she was a child.

Portraits of the young princess have been released at a month old, at her Christening, six months old, Christmas, and again when the family enjoyed their first skiing holiday just a few weeks ago. A portrait of the Queen and her youngest grandchildren and great grandchildren was issued two weeks ago on the occasion of Her Majesty's 90th birthday. Charlotte can be seen sitting sweetly on the Queen's lap.

The countdown to Princess Charlotte's christening is on. The ceremony will take place on Sunday 5th July at St Mary Magdalene church near Anmer Hall on the Queen's Sandringham Estate. 

This was also the venue for Diana, Princess of Wales' christening in August, 1961.

Charlotte will wear the replica of the traditional Honiton lace gown traditionally worn by royal babies. Godparents have not been announced but friends of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge along with a royal relative seem likely to be chosen. 

No doubt Prince George will add the cute factor. He will get to practice more royal waves as he did at St Mary's Hospital when arriving to meet Charlotte and again at the Trooping the Colour two weeks ago.

Amaia Kids clothing store in Chelsea has been given a boost recently with Prince

George wearing a blue knit cardigan and matching blue socks when he arrived at the Lindo Wing to meet baby sister Princess Charlotte on the 2nd of May.


The owner of the store Amaia Arrieta was quoted in Hello magazine: "The last time Kate paid a visit to Amaia Kids was when she was heavily pregnant with Princess Charlotte. "Three weeks before the Princess was born, she came in and bought three cardigans, three shirts, two pairs of shorts and long socks,"

Princess Charlotte is not even two months old but the sweet little girl is already creating a fashion buzz. When Charlotte was presented to the world on the steps of the Lindo Wing, she was wearing a bonnet 
( it turned out to be on backwards!) made by Spanish childrens wear label Irulea. Irulea specialises in handmade knitted garments.


It came to light that before Charlotte's birth, Irulea received a visit from the mother of the Cambridge's nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo. The handmade clothing that was chosen was given to the Duke and Duchess as a gift from their nanny.

Apart from the cream bonnet, the white clothing Charlotte wore for her first portraits with brother George was also part of the beautiful gift. 

Irulea says on it's Facebook page:
"We're so proud to hear that the British royal family chose to dress Princess Charlotte in Irulea. Her outfit was handmade in San Sebastián and consists of a jumper, a blouse, little boots and a bonnet."

Prince George was brought to St Mary's Hospital on Saturday to meet his new
baby sister.


Prince William had left the Lindo Wing to collect George from Kensington Palace and bring him to see Catherine and their new family member. 

Wearing a blue cardigan and shorts, little George was carried into the hospital by his Dad. He left a while later to be given dinner and put to bed.

At 6pm, Catherine, William and their new princess left the hospital, less than ten hours after the birth. Wearing a cheery yellow and white Jenny Packham dress, The Duchess carried the baby out onto the hospital steps for photographs with the proud dad before she was placed into a capsule and carried to the waiting car by William.

The Duke and Duchess then headed home to Kensington Palace to spend their first night with the new baby.

How The Labour And Birth Will Be Announced

Kensington Palace held a media briefing on Thursday to outline events surrounding the forthcoming birth of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's second child this month.

The Duchess is currently resting at the couple's country home Anmer Hall and is expected to return to London's Kensington Palace closer to the birth.

Kensington Palace will announce that Catherine has gone into labour via Twitter and then follow up on KensingtonRoyal and Instagram about two minutes later.

Before the birth of Prince George, the media camped outside St Mary's Hospital, Paddington for three weeks before his arrival. It was dubbed The Great Kate Wait. This time the media has been asked to arrive outside the hospital only when the Kensington Palace tweet is sent to the media outlets.

If the baby is born after 10pm, the media will not be advised until 8am the following day. The traditional notice on an easel will also be posted outside Buckingham Palace. Catherine and William's families along with Queen Elizabeth will be notified first.

As with Prince George and Princes William and Harry before him, the new baby will be born in The Lindo Wing of St Mary's. This is only a five minute drive from Kensington Palace.

Prince Charles took Prince William to visit Diana, Princess of Wales when she gave birth to Prince Harry. It is not known if George will be introduced to his new brother or sister in hospital or at home in Kensington Palace.

Prince William has started his flying duties for East Anglia Ambulance. At worst, William will need to make a two hour dash in the car to reach Catherine.

Surgeon Gynaecologist to the Royal Household Alan Farthing along with obstetrician Guy Thorpe-Beeston will take care of The Duchess throughout the labour. They were part of the team under the now retired Sir Marcus Setchell who delivered Prince George.

No doubt Catherine will be glad to see the end of another difficult pregnancy and meet their new baby. 

After a few days rest and a chance for the Queen to meet the baby, the Cambridge family will return to Anmer Hall in Sandringham, Norfolk.

With the new Baby Cambridge due "sometime" in April, the countdown to the birth has begun. 

As with big brother George, the new baby will be born at The Lindo Wing, St Mary's Hospital in Paddington.

The Lindo Wing (est. 1937) is a private facility within the greater St Mary's Hospital. Here patients enjoy a more bespoke experience and have their own consultant-led care but if needs be, access to the teaching hospital expertise and neonatal unit is available. 

Other royal babies to be born here: 

• Prince and Princess Michael of Kent's children Lord Frederick (1979) and Lady Gabriella Windsor (1981)
• Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips son Peter (1977) and daughter Zara (1981)
• The Prince and Princess of Wales' sons Princes William (1982) and Harry (1984)

Fees for the hospital birth range from GBP 5215.00 for a normal delivery (first 24 hours) up to GBP 6745.00 for a caesarean section. 

Additional nights are GBP 945.00 (superior), GBP 1155.00 (deluxe) and prices for suites are available upon request. 

New parents are offered Champagne to toast their baby's arrival. Rooms include internet, ensuite bathrooms, fridge, a fully-reclining chair for Dad to stay overnight as well as support from specialist midwives and maternity nurses.

The only problem for Catherine and William will be the noise of well wishers and media outside the hospital!

Heir He Is

After visiting his new grandson for the first time, Prince Charles told reporters "You'll see in a minute" in response to questions about the baby. Soon after, Kensington Palace confirmed the couple would leave, with a spokesman saying:


"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their baby are expected to leave hospital later this evening."

Catherine and William left hospital just over twenty four hours after the birth of their baby boy. The couple appeared at the front doors of the Lindo Wing at around 7.15pm, Catherine cradling the baby in her arms. Despite having given birth the day before, she glowed with happiness.


William and Catherine posed on the steps of the hospital for the waiting media and jubilant crowds eager to see a glimpse of the new prince. Then Catherine gently handed her son to William and they walked over to talk to the press pack and to give photographers a better view.


The Duchess wore a bespoke pale blue dress with polka dots (designed by Jenny Packham), reminiscent of Diana's green polka dot dress when she took William home 31 years earlier. It is thought a pink version was made also incase the new arrival was a girl. Catherine's baby bump was visible and she did not shy from what is a mother's normal post natal shape.

Quotes from the new parents:
William: "We've still got to decide on a name." "We'll let you know as soon as we can." "He's got a good pair of lungs on him that's for sure." "He has got Kate's looks thankfully.

Catherine: "It's very emotional, it's such a special time. I think any parent will know what this feeling feels like."

Pointing to her husband, the Duchess remarked: "He changed the first nappy."

Commenting on the long wait for the baby to arrive William said:
"I'll remind him of his tardiness when he's a bit older." "I don't know how long you guys have been here now, hopefully the hospital can get back to normal."

A Kensington Palace statement confirmed:


"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their son will travel home to Kensington Palace. Their Royal Highnesses would like to reiterate their thanks to the hospital for the care and treatment they have all received."

Baby Prince meets his Grandparents!

He may be just 24 hours old but Baby Cambridge has already had some very excited visitors to the Lindo Wing on Tuesday.

First time Grandfather Prince Charles and his second wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall visited William, Catherine and their new son for the first time.

The couple had been in Yorkshire for official engagements when the baby was born and they made sure they could visit as soon as they could the next day.

It was the first time that the new first, second and third in line to the throne were in the same room.

"You've had a long wait," he joked to the waiting media.

 Prince Charles issued an official statement on Monday night: 

"Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.

"Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future."  

Earlier in the afternoon, Catherine's beaming parents Michael and Carole arrived at the hospital to meet their new grandson.
"He's absolutely beautiful," Carole said after the visit. "They're doing fabulously."

It's A Boy!

On Monday 22nd July, London woke to what was to be one of the hottest days of the year. It was revealed that Kate had been admitted to St Mary's Hospital in the early stages of labour. A royal convoy was spotted arriving at the hospital's rear entrance at around 5.30am . Soon the press area outside the hospital was filled with journalists and photographers ready to record an historic birth. 

Three weeks earlier, on 1st July the same media representatives from around the globe marked out their territory with step ladders and tape outside the Lindo Wing. As the days became weeks and a baby had not been born, it was dubbed "The Great Kate Wait". 

At 7.30am Kensington Palace confirmed the news that Britain and the world had been hoping for:

"Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge has been admitted this morning to St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London in the early stages of labour," the statement read. "The Duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge." 

 Finally, at 4.24pm on Monday 22nd July, baby Cambridge was safely delivered by the Queen's surgeon-gynaecologist Marcus Setchell, the royal family's gynaecologist Alan Farthing, obstetrician Guy Thorpe-Beeston and St Mary's neonatologist Dr Sunit Godambe. 

 However, Kensington Palace waited until 8.30pm to announce the news. It is believed that William and Catherine wanted some private family time with their newborn before announcing the birth. They ordered pizza and spent those precious few early hours with just themselves and the new baby Prince. They knew that their little bubble would soon burst and the world would clammer for news. The statement from Kensington Palace said: 

"Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm.The baby weighs 8lb 6oz. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight"

 Despite, announcing the birth via Kensington Palace, the tradition of announcing a royal birth on an easel outside Buckingham Palace was adhered to. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's Press Secretary Ed Perkins left the Lindo Wing just after 8.30pm holding a red leather folder containing the official document. Written on Buckingham Palace-headed notepaper, the historic document had been signed by Catherine's doctors Marcus Setchell and Alan Farthing.Mr Perkins was then driven to Buckingham Palace, arriving through the main gates with a police escort. 

 William issued a statement saying "We could not be happier." The proud dad then stayed overnight at the hospital with his wife and newborn son.
